Venue R1 This hotel has a more exotic, ecclesiastical ancestry that the other ancient villa hotels, being originally a Bishop’s residence. An associated “good & gracious" Episcopio wine was said to well favoured by Richard Wagner, for whom the hotel was also his favoured lodgings when he first came to Ravello in the spring of 1880. The family piano, on which he spent hours sketching passages for Parsifal, still has an honoured place among the hotel's impressive collection of antique furnishings & fittings. The interior architecture is also noted for its Greco-Roman-style marble columns & Moorish (invasive Saracen) arches. Wagner inscribed a warm note in the guest-book, as did many other world luminaries who followed in his wake – or actually after it, following his death in 1883 & the more or less simultaneous first performance of his “Ravello work."

The hotel is located directly opposite the Municipio, only a short procession from the civil ceremonials. It’s therefore a well-accustomed, as well as well-reputed, host for the receptions, either in its interior “stately halls" or its sea-view rose gardens & groves of the incomparable “Amalfi Lemon." (Another distinction – another story.) The hotel is exclusive, just 21 rooms & suites. Its cuisine makes the very best, most imaginative use of local fish, seafood & organic farm produce. Its service is meticulously attentive. Overall, the hotel is a favoured location, especially (though not exclusively) for non-religious weddings.
